Cancun!

Cancun was great! Didn't take a lot of pics... in fact, I forgot my camera entirely (knew it was a bad idea to leave it charging upstairs the night before), and we were just plain having too much fun to stop and take many pics. But here are a few anyway, courtesy of Abuelito.

Albert's parents have a timeshare at the Royal Sunset, Cancun. They have been several times, but it was new to us. Apparently it's a popular place because there were lots of families enjoying it. The beach and the pool were awesome. The rooms were not really designed for toddlers, but they were nice. Lots of space, lots of bathrooms, and a little kitchenette that was just perfect for serving breakfast and lunch whenever the kids got hungry. We ate only a couple of meals at the resort- preferring to venture out for dinner. The main Hotel Zone in Cancun is easily to navigate. Very touristy, and not that different to what you'd find in any beach city in the US, but Albert's parents already had their favorite restaurants picked out.

Can you believe this beach? Fine white sand, gorgeous clear Carribean water, and a blue sky that went on forever. Funny thing though, I thought the sun always set over the ocean. It did so all my life. It was so strange to have the sunset be behind us, and I never did make it up early enough to really see a sunrise in exchange!

One lost suitcase (of course the one with the diapers and the kids' swimsuits) on the way there necessitated a few extra trips to Walmart- yes, they really are everywhere- but everything worked out fine. (And the suitcase eventually did make it back to us. Hope it had a nice trip- who knows where it went that we didn't.)




We swam every morning and played on the beach every afternoon. Siestas for all in the room in between. Josh preferred the pool- no sand in his eyes or strong waves. There was a 6'-wide tile ledge around the pool that was just right for him to splash around it, and the middle of the pool had a raised fountain with some jacuzzi-like cutouts for sitting in that Alex enjoyed swimming out to and back.


Albert bought a boogy board at Walmart and Alex had a blast riding the last 4' of the waves as they rolled onto the beach. He was a little distressed that we had to leave it there, but he had some much fun we promised to get him a another boogy board next time we went to the beach.









Albert and I left the kids with Nona and Abuelito one day and took a day-trip to an eco-park called Xcaret. No pics cause we 1) didn't want to lug the camera with us, and 2) didn't feel the need to purchase any of the multiple photos that were taken of us at the park that day. However, it is definitely worth mentioning! LONG day... the bus left at 7:30am and didn't return until 11pm. Not really knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality, cleanliness and staffing of the park. There were numerous beach and water activities- two that we made an effort to do were to 1) Snuba (a tankless 21' dive) at the offshore reef and 2) Snorkel the 2,000' underground river. It was the one place where we stopped to really enjoy Mexican food on the whole trip, and gosh I wish I had their recipie for iced tea because it was really unusual and refreshing! The whole day of sun and swimming was topped off with a 2-hr show celebrating Mexico's history and culture from the Mayans to the Spaniards to Modern Day. Definitely worth the trip!

And of course, no trip to the beach is complete without building a sandcastle. We built many, but this was the Gran Castillo of them all.

Step 5: Celebrate your accomplishment


Step 6: Knock it down faster than Godzilla can because destruction is inevitable
